It's 3.29 am and I can't sleep cause I'm hyper-fixating on microcontrollers and fans so here goes a question for my autistic humans.
What's your current hyper-fixation?

Local Guy Successfully Interacts With Contraption
#another lab mailed me an apparatus#i had no expectations for my capacity to operate the apparatus but it turns out that uh#when someone sends you prewritten code to run an arduino that only needs to control one dimension of one motor#you can just run the code. it all works fine.#really absolutely nothing to be done i got it all worked out in like 2 hrs of combined testing and setup incl sterilizing everything#now of course the actual troubleshooting will be if for some reason my tissues are different from the ones theyve tested#e.g. hate to grow on silanized things (won't happen)#or rupture in response to insult (could happen but also these cells are not actually very fragile)#but that part is my actual job. which troubleshooting an arduino is not.#so that part i feel less completely unable to make predictions about#anyway. guy can plug 2 things in. big news! big cool exciting news for everybody#box opener

On one hand, I hate my robotics teacher for teaching us the same lesson on python loops we've been learning for half the damn school year, then expecting us to make an innovative robot in 3 weeks when arduino is based on C++.
I was gonna counter that with something else, but as I wrote it I realized just how stupid it actually is. Fuck it. Venting time.
NO CUZ I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS GUY. WDYM "Programming's easy! You learn the basics, and from there you make your own solutions." ??? That's not verbatim but. STILL.
I'll give him a bit of credit, he taught us the basics of arduino. The proper syntax, loops, variables, functions, motor control, sensors, etc. But for god's sake, that limited pool of knowledge can only get you enough to make a mini car! It would've been nice to learn about fading LEDs, integer overflow, pointers vs the actual value in a variable, OR EVEN WHAT DOCUMENTATION IS. YEAH. DOCUMENTATION. THE LITERAL OFFICIAL EXPLANATION FOR KEY FEATURES IN PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES.
But suddenly its OUR fault our code doesn't work because "I taught you the basics. If you don't understand, that means you're not listening during my classes." MAYBE IF YOU STOPPED TEACHING US WHAT A FUCKING FOR LOOP IS, WE'D HAVE A REASON TO LISTEN. Majority of my understanding of robotics are a product of self study and receiving help from my family and their long list of IT contacts.
Not only that, HE is the one that approves of our robotics projects. If YOUR students can't complete the project YOU personally approved of, isn't that an error on your part? You should know what your students are capable of making. You should know because they should only know WHAT YOU TEACH THEM. So surprise surprise when your students feel like they're forced to hire people to do their projects, all because of your failure to teach them the skills they needed to do it themselves.
The only people getting a passing grade in this class are gonna be those that are either rich or have a lot of contacts. What a fucking joke.
And don't be mistaken, this is NOT the complaint of someone who doesn't understand programming. I consistently get 90% and above on his exams and do coding for fun. I'm complaining on behalf of my classmates who weren't as lucky as me, in that I have way more people to ask help from.
"100% working by this week" my ass. Actually teach us something relevant for once.
#dumb ramblings#vent post#ough#for the record i do like coding in python#i prefer it over C++ actually#But none of our projects use python#so I don't know what's going on in my teacher's head...

I’m a coder (and electrical engineer, model builder, and a few other things) and I hate the “learn to code” crowd with the fire of a thousand suns.
Not only is learning to code not a ticket to a livable wage (seriously, the executives are positively giddy at a massive downward pressure on wages in that field), but many people just flat out aren’t good at it, and if they code at all, they crank out hard-to-maintain code that just causes pain for any project bigger than an Arduino (which itself teaches a lot of bad coding habits).
If anything, we’d be much better served with coders learning the arts (that includes writing). It would make them better coders.

im a transman! my pronouns are he/him.
my spirit animal is bear 🐻

i have a russian origin, but im fluent in english, so dont hesitate to talk to me in english, i can understand you!
my main fandoms are half life and 8:11.
i really like hunting rifles and knives, making arduino projects and esp. my friends🦭
sort of my vibe⬆️

Which by the way, most circuit compendiums today fucking suck. I hate what Arduino has done to the electronics hobby. Can't have anything nice at all.
I need to find one published later than the advent of the microcomputer but earlier than the Bush Jr administration. Those were the good ones.

Traditionally I've used the Teensy, an arduino-compatible microcontroller that was both cheap and very powerful in terms of being able to act as USB devices. They've since been discontinued (Some high-end Teensy models technically remain: they're not useful to me for several reasons), and I've not really found a replacement yet, so I've been using old Teensies I bought before the discontinuation.
I've been slowly moving into using the rpi Pico too. I kinda hate it (the US device support is exceptionally finicky and difficult to debug) but it is functional-enough that I've made a couple keyboards on it. It's not a good fit for most of my uses (it's not 5v, which I need because I'm From The Past) but it can work, and it's both cheaper and more available than Teensies are or were.
Wait if I can find the code for my poetry keyboard I could use it to build a forcefem keyboard that switches the pronouns you type to only be she/her

What's wrong with Arduino and why I hate it
This is a typical presentation on what's wrong with Arduino: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K88pgWhEb1M
Let's start from the begining — the ATmega328 chip. Looking at the pinout you will see, that there is no completely usable port. If you want to use asynchronous driver (occupying PD), you have to use crystal oscilator (PC, and is also incomplete lacking PC7) etc. The best you can do is to divide your IO into two nibbles and use lower nibble of PB and PC port and is also vise (but not necessary) exclude PB0 line, because is wired to the opposite side ot the DIL package. Reading (in C) means something like ((PORTC & 0x0F)<<4)+((PORTB>>1)&0x0F) and writing PORTB=((0x0F & data)<<1); PORTC=((0xF0 & data)>>4);. Simple and easy. And, of course, you can also use PB5 line if you want.
Doing the same thing in Arduino leads to bitwise access to every pin using for() cycle, but switching pins between input and output means bitwise operations too, on top of that, there lurks the bug he was unable to fix. You have to set IOs to input before switching on the EEPROMs output. Yes, this means another cycle, he tried to be wise and use the cycle used for reading (which is impossible), but failed, because he set OE before reading from the EEPROM, which is correct, but reading EEPROM in this pseudowise implementation leads to setting OE before switching IOs to input, which is completely incorrect and terrifying more than terrorist or Walter's farts and, of course, could cause the damage to the microcotroller, eeprom, or both of them and is also the cause of improper reading. Thing broke as soon as he tried to switch from writing to reading. He is reading some bits in the same moment as others are shorted to ground or Vcc. As soon as the first byte is read, all the IOs are set to inputs and could not cause more problems, so the first byte must be improperly read. And on top of that all lays misconceptual dealing with strobe signal, which affects address lines but not OE signal and causes the OE is swirling between Hi and Lo state in the rythm of overwriting previous address data inside shift registers and causes more shortages when IOs are set as output on the MCU side.
To complete the whole horrorshow, data are read from EEPROM to RAM (inside small MCU), then reformated to a complicated in memory stored string and then send through asynchronous serial line. The MCU's async driver transmits from one byte memory, so the whole string is processed byte after byte. There is no need to store data inside MCU's RAM, if you are not using Arduino. Arduino is not equipped with correct async support, there is no function to convert byte to asciihex and Arduinists are too lazy to write it on their own, so they are using a huge amount of system resources instead of doing things simple and correct way. And this is the thing I most hate on Arduino. It is depicted as an educational project which main goal is to teach how to code on small MCU's, but in fact, it is teaching how to do it a wicked way. Failing at the most important goal means failing completely. Nothing wrong about that, the only way not to fail is do nothing. but what drives me crazy is the fundamental belief that everything is correct and it is me who cannot understand. The only way how to make things better is understanding where they failed, not the fundamental blindness.

I'm so glad my stem teacher was like understanding and nice because third period was very difficult for me sometimes, like that particular time of day was so bad and we had a lot of projects that I half assed
#stop motion was difficult#but i think i hated the arduino things the most#especially with an incredibly unreliable partnet

oooh my god ok great news
i kindof hate working with computers. but. but.
i would not ever buy a wiretap but yknow that video where they hooked up a billy big mouth bass to an amazon alexa. is there any way i can do that but just, have it be a bluetooth speaker. i want to ask my billy big mouth bass to play razorfever by dark tranquillity and see it headbang. but yknow without my personal conversations being sold for pennies

I've been feeling really bad about myself lately, and yesterday I told the boy that I feel entirely worthless. He looked at me and said, "Woman, you got bored once and decided to teach yourself robotics engineering, went online, bought an Arduino kit from servo city, and built a fucking spiderbot in your living room? You literally TAUGHT YOURSELF THREE SEPARATE CODING LANGUAGES TO MAKE IT RUN DON'T YOU EVER FUCKING CALL YOURSELF WORTHLESS AGAIN," and at this point he's just shouting in my face, both hands on my shoulders, so frustrated like, "REMEMBER THE TIME YOU GOT BORED, FUCKED AROUND, AND RANDOMLY BECAME FLUENT IN MANDARIN??????? REMEMBER THAT, BITCH??????? YOU'RE SO FUCKING SMAAAAAAAAAAART I HATE YOU! YOU'RE SO GODDAMN COOL!"
Anyway, his methods of hyping me up are a little confusing, but he did make me feel better. I like that kid, I'm gonna try to work on liking myself more too. Tell me what you're good at?
